Social Networking Norms? (or MySpace Melts My Brain...How About Yours?)

Tip of the Day: Libraries + Full Moons = Strange patrons out and about....beware....

Tina's post yesterday about all the internet social networks available got me thinking about MySpace.

At the library, teens are on MySpace all the time. I see less on FaceBook, but I know from word of mouth that they go there, too.

So is MySpace washed up in terms of connecting with teen readers? Is FaceBook the best place to go for providing a venue for discussions of your work and a way to reach authors?

I recently bought my domain (bc there's such a HUGE demand for deenalipomi.com), and was wondering what content would make it accessible and fun, like apparently the social networking sites are? A blog? Pics and videos? What do you like in an author website? What do teens like?

Ooh, you bought your domain? Fun. My husband has a Flip camera. It's super easy to make a vlog with it. Although I don't know if I can figure out how to edit as well as Lisa does.

My nieces and nephews are younger teens and they're Facebookers ... actually the older ones are too. They just don't friend their older relatives so I can't spy on them.

Maybe you could go for both. I think it probably depends on the school. At my school, for example, many people have Myspace, but recently Facebook has become more popular and much more active.

Personally, I love author blogs, and I think other teens probably like fun blogs too, as well as videos!

I say do it all! I'm not feeling like I've been getting a whole lots from MySpace lately whereas facebook is constant communication. Like, I check it 398 times a day. Roughly. :-) But there are tons of family and friends on there too so it's fun keeping up with everyone.

As for Web site, I sent hubby a link to Sarah Dessen's the other day because I love how she has all of her places at the bottom so you can easily find her. Twitter, facebook, myspace, LJ. That's what I want too.

I feel like usage of myspace has really dropped off. When I first set up my page over 2 years ago, I'd log in and SO many people were logged in at the same time, and I'd get messages and stuff everyday. Now, it's so much slower. It feels to me like more people are on facebook, but what do I know? :)

Hi there! I stumbled upon your blog by looking for YA authors! I just recently became one, and I am definitely up for any pointers from a pro! :)

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone! I think if I had to choose, just to use my time wisely, I'd go facebook at this point.

Does anyone limit the amount of time per day or whatev that they spend on social networking sites?

I have both a facebook and myspace account, but prefer facebook because it seems easier to use and more active. I've had facebook since it came out and was limited to only college students, and I definitely use it less now than I did then.
For your website, I would definitely suggest lots of pictures! I love to read Meg Cabot's blog because the pictures are fun and give readers a glimpse into her life. Photos are a good way to spark interest even if readers aren't familiar with you or your work.
