People-by-the-Sea (or Deena-by-the-Pond)

Tip of the Day: Lisa Schroeder's THE DAY BEFORE comes out in just 28 days!

Last week I went to Narragansett, RI for vacation. Wow. What a beautiful place! I'd post pics if a) Blogger was working properly, and b) I hadn't forgotten my camera in Newport. But I digress.

We were surrounded by water almost at all times, and the power of the ocean was relaxing, invigorating, and inspiring all at the same time. How I wished I could retreat there to write. Somehow just being around all that power made me want to sit by it, amidst the rolling fog, and let the words flow!

I was not there to write; I was there to hang out with friends and sight see and eat (yummmmm...Crazy Burger). Which was all good too!

Now I am back home, sitting on my porch in the awesome summery spring weather, with my pond and ducks and red-winged blackbirds and robins and sparrows, all of whom I love. But I still feel like the words would flow better if I were listening to the rush of the ocean instead of the traffic on I-390.

What about you readers? Do you find you write better in some environments than others?

And those of you who live on the ocean, do the words really flow like I imagine they would? Or does a change in scenery jumpstart creativity?

Well, since you asked... No. I mean, sometimes yes but often... Wait, why don't I back up.

I grew up in North Florida like a half mile off the beach and now live in South Florida close enough to take a work afternoon to Key Largo. Which is now very tempting. Oops. Anyway I'm definitely a fan of the beach/ocean. I have taken my laptop down to a restaurant with a deck overlooking the water and tried to work. Sometimes it helps--then again sometimes so does going to the library and that dowsn't take as much gas. I think if I wrote lighter stuff it might help more but since the subjects and theme of my WIP are kinda dark it doesn't get me in the right mood.

So now that I've taken your quesrion way too literally glad you had a good trip. :)

And sorry for all the typos. :)

Wendy, I can totally picture this. Who could write dark on the beach in the sunshine? I'm probably writing dark stuff right now because I'm stuck writing at night!

Wendy, I really was curious! Your answer makes sense, and like Kate said, I could totally see the light v. dark stories needing different places to write. Like different background music, etc.

But I am jealous of your home's location. I am close to Lake Ontario, so I could head there in a 15 minute pinch, but there's nothing like the ocean....

Ooh, I just got invited to an event in RI next spring. I don't know if it's going to happen or not, but I've heard how beautiful it is, so i'm hoping it works out. Plus they want me to judge a cupcake baking contest. MY DREAM JOB, OH MY GOSH!!!

So glad you had fun!!

Aww, thanks Kate and Deena. Yeah, I'm totally blessed to live here and even if the mood doesn't fit sometimes I just wanna take advantage. Hehehe.
Now Lake Ontario? I'm sure there's some gorgeous scenery there, too! :-)
